Oh goddamn it! So, the Republicans won and big time. Which means we are
now, more than ever, in this country engaged in a fight to preserve a woman’s reproductive freedom and promote sane
sex education. MHG is unabashedly pro-choice, against abstinence only sex education and more than anything very pissed off.
So we’re rallying the (oh so sexy) troops to do their part in this battle. We’ve compiled a list and brief descriptions
of the activities of some of the most important non-governmental organizations operating within the U.S. that are fighting
the good fight. If you are anti-choice and take issue with our politics that’s fine just please don’t e-mail us.
This is not a democracy this is a cheerocracy and we’re your unrepentant evil cheertators. Without further ado may we
please ask you to consider donating your time and/or money to any one of the following groups: If you’re a woman and have ever used birth control and DON’T
support Planned Parenthood in some way you should probably adopt an attitude of gratitude and rectify that sooner rather than
later. Planned Parenthood was founded in 1916 by nurse Margaret Sanger and her sister Ethel Byrne, as American’s first
birth control clinic providing contraceptives and advice to poor immigrant women in Brooklyn, New York. Since then Planned
Parenthood has been at the forefront of insuring that contraceptives and pre-natal care are available to all American women
regardless of their ability to pay, believing everyone has "the right to choose when or whether to have a child, and that
child should be wanted and loved, and that women should be in charge of their own destinies." The primary mission of NARAL is to promote better family planning as well
as ensure that contraceptives are freely available to those who need them. However, NARAL is also deeply committed to protecting
a woman’s right to choose should she need an abortion. As such the organization has been instrumental in fighting state
and federal anti-choice legislation through organizing grassroots political activism. On their website you can find not only
a brief description the laws regarding reproductive rights in your state but also how you can help to change the legislation. With the re-election of the President the administration is seeking $30
million in increased funding for abstinence-only sex-education despite the fact that state-by-state evaluations on their effectiveness
have shown these programs to be a total failure. No New Money seeks to, well, do all they can to stop more money being given
to these programs at home and abroad. The organization is committed to stopping abstinence-only education by giving visitors
to their website not only information about these programs, and why they don’t work to prevent the spread of disease
and unwanted pregnancy, but also all information they need to lobby their own elected officials through the No New Money Action
Center. Center for Reproductive Rights The CRR is a non-profit advocacy center dedicated to protecting the reproductive
rights of women worldwide. Since 1992 the center "has defined the course of reproductive rights law in the United States with
significant victories in courts across the country, including two landmark cases in the U.S. Supreme Court: Stenberg v. Carhart
(2000) and Ferguson v. City of Charleston (2001). Using international human rights law to advance the reproductive freedom
of women, the Center has strengthened reproductive health laws and policies across the globe by working with more than 50
organizations in 44 nations including countries in Africa, Asia, East Central Europe, and Latin America and the Caribbean."
As the center accepts no government funding they are totally dependent upon private donation in order to continue their work.
At their website not only can you educate yourself about reproductive rights legislation but also make a much-needed contribution. Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice The RCRC was founded in 1973 by clergy members as well as lay leaders from
religious organizations committed to safeguarding the right of access to abortions in the wake of Row vs. Wade. Today the
coalition is made of members from every major faith throughout the country who despite their diverse different religious beliefs
and backgrounds all agree that "the commitment to preserve reproductive choice as a basic part of religious liberty." You
can learn more about the coalitions activities and the theological issues regarding abortion as well as make a donation on
their website. Originally founded in 1997 with funds from the Ford Foundation, SisterSong
is a grassroots collective representing the four major ethnic groups in the United States: Latin/Hispanic, African American,
Asian and Native American The goal of the collective is to educate women and policy makers on reproductive rights issues facing
the community. Support SisterSong by joining the collective via their website. Finally, we would like to add that this list is in NO WAY a complete directory
of all the amazing grassroots organizations working to ensure a woman’s right to choose. The groups we chose to profile
were meant to be indicative of the types of organizations that exist in order to inspire our readers to find their niche and
get involved. If there is some organization you feel passionately about and think deserves greater publicity drop us a line
and we’ll be happy to provide a link.
